Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition that Dr. Johnson has had much success in treating. Fibromyalgia is a condition that is diagnosed by a person having pain in multiple sites on the body.  The pain is located in the fibrous muscle fascia that wraps around each muscle like a tough "saran wrap".

The medical approach to fibromyalgia management is to give NSAID's, pain relievers, muscle relaxers, antidepressants, and / or other psychotropic medication. While this can be effective in dulling the pain, these medications do little to correct the underlying issues in the body that are leading to the fibromyalgia muscle pain in the first place.  Additionally, many of these medications interfere with the normal healing processes of the body, and can have unwanted mind-altering side-effects.

In order to effectively treat fibromyalgia, one first has to understand the root cause of the problem in the first place.  Fibromyalgia patients have several causes to their problem which compound and complicate each other.  Those causes are as follows:

Vitamin D3 Deficiency:  Research shows that many patients who are diagnosed with fibromyalgia actually suffer from vitamin D deficiency which can manifest itself as musculoskeletal pain that is resistant to other therapies. Lab testing ordered by your chiropractor or medical provider is the only definitive method to determine if a patient really is vitamin D deficient.

Lack of Physical Activity:  Fibromyalgia patients are usually sedentary before the onset of their problem or become that way due to their pain.  This can create a vicious cycle where exercising is painful, but not exercising further aggravates their condition.

Inflammatory Diet:  Fibromyalgia sufferers inevitably consume a diet that is low in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and marine lipids (fish oil); and eat one that is high in preservatives, sugar, MSG, hydrogenated oil, high fructose corn syrup, white flour, and fatty cuts of meat.  This increases the amount of inflammation in the body and can make it easier to sense pain, even if a person shouldn't be in pain!

Joint Dysfunction:  Many people suffer from a condition known as joint dysfunction or subluxation.  Poor posture, stress, repetitive strain, and trauma can all cause your joints to lose their normal position and motion.  When this occurs, the nerves near the joint can become irritated and hyperactive, causing the muscles that surround the joint to fire too much.  If left untreated, this can lead to muscle, nerve, or joint pain.  Chiropractors are the only profession trained to locate and correct this problem.  Once corrected, motion in the joint is restored, pain is reduced, and function is improved.

As one can see, fibromyalgia has many different causes that can lead to this painful condition.  Fortunately, Doctors of Chiropractic, such as Dr. Johnson are able to help an individual with this condition by addressing all of the causes, as well as identifying and treating those issues that are unique to each person.  If you would like to have the cause of your fibromyalgia treated, please call Our Columbia, MO Clinic at 573-447-0841
